This is a simple checklist, with brief comments, of all the bird species I have seen in and around the Lac du Der / Lac d'Orient area
Little Grebe - Only occasional sightings on Lac d'Orient
Great Crested Grebe - Common on all lakes, the most widespread grebe, sometimes present in very large numbers
Cormorant - Common on all lakes, large numbers roost on the Lac du Der
Great White Egret - Becoming more and more common, not now unusual to see this species
Grey Heron - Common
Purple Heron - Apparently breeds at Lac du Der
Mute swan - Common
Bewicks Swan - Rare, seen on Lac d'Orient
Whooper Swan - Present in small numbers in winter
Bean Goose - Present in small numbers in winter
Grey Lag Goose - Present in large numbers in winter, probably breeds
Wigeon - Present in very large numbers in winter
Gadwall - Common resident
Teal - Common
Mallard - Common resident
Pintail - Common
Shoveler - Common
Pochard - Common
Tufted duck - Common
Goldeneye - Common in winter, especially in the wildfowl areas near Champaubert Church and Larzicourt
Smew - Common in winter, especially in the wildfowl areas near Champaubert Church and Larzicourt
Goosander - Often present in winter in large numbers out on the open water
Black Kite - Status unknown, seen South of Lac d'Orient in spring
Red Kite - Present in low numbers in winter
White-Tailed Eagle- Present in low numbers in winter, apparently near any of the lakes
Hen Harrier - Present in winter, sometimes in good numbers - appears to roost in reeds well out in the Lac du Der
Goshawk - Occasional sightings, probably under-recorded
Sparrowhawk - Resident, common
Osprey - Common and regular on passage
Common Buzzard -Resident, common
Kestrel - Resident, common
Peregrine - Regular sightings, probably winter visitors
Grey Partridge -Resident, common
Pheasant - Resident, common
Moorhen - Resident, common
Coot - Resident, Common - winter visitor in very large numbers
Common Crane - Winter visitor, very large numbers on passage
Lapwing - Resident, common - winter visitor in very large numbers
Dunlin - Status unknown, probably winter visitor and on passage in low numbers
Snipe - Resident, common - winter visitor in very large numbers
Woodcock - Status unknown, probable resident and winter visitor in low numbers
Curlew - Winter visitor, large numbers on passage
Redshank -Resident, common - winter visitor in very large numbers
Mediterranean Gull - Status unknown, probably a passage migrant
